Poker and Family: Balancing the Two

Hello
For many of the younger players, family obligations (for the purpose of this article, family is defined as a spouse and child[ren]) don't get in the way of putting in the many hours at the poker table that it takes to be a consistent winner. For us old people, family must come first. I don't mean to suggest that younger poker players neglect their families (brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, etc.). Not at all. However, a single guy living with two buddies in an apartment doesn't really have to think much about when he wants to play. If he is in the mood, he sits down and plays. Those who are married with children cannot simply open up a table whenever they feel like it. So how does one balance family obligations and poker? How can someone with major familial obligations play winning poker and still do what needs to be done for his or her family?

Sick of these blogs

I have quite a few blogs in which i subscribe to in my google rss reader, these are all poker related blogs , but I'm sick of these supposed POKER blogs that write about other sh*t .. if I wanted to know about tv shows such as heroes or lost then I will subscribe to a tv blog, if I cared about stupid trivia games then I would actually read the bs spam that I get in my email, if I cared about the perfect season of the new england patriots then I would be glued to espn ... Unfortunately , I will be removing some of your so called poker blogs from my reader ...sorry guys

The Online Charity Poker Series (OCPS)

By: The Monster Stack (Guest Blogger)

Hello,

This post is about a topic that is very important to me, and I hope is important to you as well. The topic of which I speak is charity. I personally feel that one of the most important things that people who are fortunate need to do is help those who need it most. In addition to giving a substantial amount to charity annually, I have run several live charity poker tournaments which have been very successful in raising money for good causes. I have decided that this year, in addition to running my usual live event, I would set up a series of online poker tournaments to raise money for various charities.

So this year, on Full Tilt Poker, there will be The First Annual Online Charity Poker Series (OCPS). There will be fourteen events in total including a Tournament of Champions freeroll tournament. Game will include Hold 'Em, Omaha, Omaha H/L, Stud, Razz and HORSE. Many charities will be supported as well including The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Save Darfur, Doctors Without Borders and many others. Buy-ins range from $15 to $90 and there are many tournament formats, including knockouts, super stacks, rebuy and 6-max.

I ask that everyone join me in helping others by registering for as many tournaments as possible. Spread the word by telling players who you know play poker. Add the graphic above to your blog with a link to the OCPS web site. Blog about it. Do anything you can to help spread the word. Help me make this series a successful one. Thank you for your support.

For more information on these tournaments please visit http://ocpokerseries.blogspot.com/.

See you on the felt,

Happy New Year / Headed to Bahamas for PCA

I'm writing this blog post from the airplane, and I know I haven't posted in a while , ill try to do my best.

December started out great , I was playing lots of 2/4 on full tilt and was up about $4500 , but then I had a horrible week over the christmas week , and I lost about $1800 , I had some horrible bad beats and I tilted a lot , I even broke some of my own rules that I had set for myself , and the last few days of the month I didn't even play any poker because I was disgusted with myself.. I also hate to blog when I'm feeling down about poker so that's why I didn't post any updates.

I played some MTT's with no success and played some live games in my neighborhood and made about $500 from there...so for december I'm up about $3300 which is very good , and it is a lot , but I am disappointed with my play and if I ever want to play poker long term and rely on it for income I have to really plug my leaks . Knowing how to play poker is not enough, its so important to bring my A game to the table EVERYTIME I play , and I guess I don't . A guy like matusow is a great player , but only when he is on his A game , and unfortunately he don't always bring the A game with him. A guy like ivey / greenstein is always on his A game . I'm not even sure how to begin this process, but I guess being aware is the first step.

as for january, I haven't played online at all yet, just some 2/5 live cash games and basically broke even on that front. I'm not sure I'm going blog about my profits/losses anymore, reason being, when I started this blog it was really to help me keep track of my own poker exploits and have a reference so that I can always read back and see how I've evolved. I also thought it would help me be more disciplined. And at first I figured this blog would be anonymus, and only for all you fake internet friends that I have. However, lately a lot of ppl who I actually know ( and some of them being fake friends too ) are reading my blog , which is great and I feel WOW that all you ppl are actually wasting your time with this. But I realized that a select few are sort of jealous of me and make comments 'that I suck' or 'im a lucky bastard' , ( not u TMS, ur criticism is good for me and helps me evaluate ). The ppl I'm referring to are not necessarily my good friends , but just some others.
Another example of something that really irked me is , a few weeks back , after one of my weekly Bounty Tourneys that I host every sunday night on Full Tilt (10pm EST / password - thepokergrind ) , one of my neighborhood ppl had placed in the money , which was great ... But a few days later I had learned that this guy along with some others who played in that tourney were accusing me of stealing money out of the prizepool!!!... As if full tilt gives me access to everyones buyins and let's me skim off the top. So, there were 3 or 4 guys all saying how I stole some money , but yet they never said anything to me. Not to mention, that I hosted a home game for 2 yrs every week, served hot food , drinks and never took a rake or a tourney fee or any money from anyone (although 3 separate times out of the roughly 100 times I hosted , did the winner of that nights tourney fork over a $20 bill to cover my expenses ). And some of the same dooooooooosh bags who came to the game were the ones acc
using me of skimming like $50 from the prizepool. So when I found out that ppl were talking about me behind my back , all I did was simply send a pic of the tourney lobby to their emails. Within minutes I got a few phone calls apologizing , but I still think about it till this day, I mean , here I am blogging about $3500 profit and I'm being accused by ppl I know of stealing $50....and during my home games there was never an issue, in fact ppl used to come to my house with no money and I would lay it out constantly. I guess it bothers me that they didn't just ask me about it but instead decided to discuss it openly in front of a lot of ppl, some who know me and some who just know OF me. And even though these few guys now know that I didn't skim, what about all the ppl who heard them talking about it? And also, once an accusation is out there it sort of sticks and ppl rememeber it and if there's ever a future issue I would always be suspect. I always say that where there's smoke there
's fire, so now that applies to me , which sux.Whatever , maybe I'm just venting bec I have nothing else to do on this shitty plane, I feel I'm stuffed with cattle, the dooooooosh next to me is not only hogging the armrest he is practically sleeping on top of me,. Luckily for him I saw him take a listerine tab before takeoff or else I would just elbow him by 'mistake'. The plane is making so much noise that I feel that the pilot is gonna climb out over the Carolinas and restart the propellar, and freakin spirit airlines has this new rule where they not only charge you for alcohol, but they charge $3 for a bottle of water and $4 for soda, phreakin ridiculous!!!! Not to mention $10 per piece of luggage. Why don't they just add $15 to the airfare and not look so petty!!!!

Anyways, I'm headed to Bahamas now and shouldn't really complain. Tonight Pokerstars and Daniel Negraneu and 2005 WSOP champ Joe Hachem are hosting a reception party for all us lucky satellite winners, and supposedly most of Team Pokerstars will be there too, including 2004 WSOP champ Greg 'fossilman' Raymer , loudmouth Hevad 'rainkahn' Kahn, lovely vanessa rousso , annoying Humbeeeeeeerto Brenes, one of my favorites Barry Greenstein, and the man whose somewhat responsible for this new Poker Boom , 2003 WSOP champ Chris Moneymaker.

There are 2 starting days for the tourney, and ill be starting on Day 1B , and after looking at the roster, it seems that most of these pros will be starting that day too. Ill keep my camera handy and try to post some good pics.

I'm going to try to blog a lot while down in Bahamas and try to keep all of you updated.

Wish me luck,
