Noone Wants To Hear A Freakin Bad Beat Story

wow , im totally venting now , I just got major bad beated by the Full Tilt Machine that felted me 3 times within 10 hands , When i play $2/$4 i usually limit myself to 2 buyins a day if i lose , this way i dont tilt or lose too much ,anyways , i decided not to listen to myself and rebought a 3rd time

heres the first hand

here all our money goes in after the flop , where im clearly ahead, for some reason my opponent calls , and all he has is 2 overcards , and boom , and then boom

about 3 hands later , and against the same guy , we get all our money in after the turn , and he still calls me , the only thing he is able to beat is a bluff!!!, and theres like $250 in the pot, jeez , what a river

and here i was hoping my opponent would call me and have the hand that he did , our money went all in after i check raised him all in ...what a brutal turn card

this all happened in the span of like 20 minutes, and im down $480 for the day , i usually only let myself buyin twice , but this was so brutal , and i didnt even tilt , but im done for the night , ill prob play a tourney just for kicks

Recap: ThePokerGrind.net's Bounty Tournament

A small turnout in this weeks TPG dot net Bounty Tourney due to the holiday weekend , but nevertheless was alot of fun. We had 9 players come out to try their skill and earn the easiest bounty ( mine ) available online. Game last about 1.5 hours and was a blast, Unfortunately for me i was the bubble boy getting knocked out in 4th place and congrats to my boy michaeleisner for earning my bounty.

I was chip leader with about 5 ppl left , i made a move with A 10 against wallstreetfish , but like the donkey he is he called with JQ and by the time the river came he had a straight which beat my 2 pair. Some of you maybe noticed that i had sat out about 20% of the tourney due to my son not feeling well and i had to tend to him while mrs. pokergrind slept, yay.

heres a pic of the finishers

the 3 players who managed to cash in the event are:

3rd place - roochie m , seemed destined to be the first player knocked out after being left with a shortstack during the first orbit , but some patience and savvy allowed him to luckbox ( just kidding) his way into 3rd place, congrats

2nd place - wallstreetfish , another one of my brooklyn friends, played very well , and i only recall him sucking out just once, AGAINST ME!! but he apparently won his last longer bet with roochie m,... side note, your wife called , she seemed very impressed that you are able to 'last longer'

last hand

1st place - michaeleisner , also one of my bklyn friends and someone i chill with on a regular basis, not sure how he pulled this one off though , ... a little background, about 3 months ago i asked him if i can play poker using his home office since he has a nice dual monitor setup, after a few days of him watching me he asked me to set up a full tilt account for him , when he finally logged on and was ready to play a $1 sng, he quickly asked , "flush beats a full house, right?" , fast forward 3 months and about a zillion $1 sng's later he was able to take down this tourney sunday night. Right before the tourney started he txts me saying , i dont wanna play such a high stakes tourney, i guess i shouldnt have convinced him to play, lol , congrats , and i have to admit, your game is getting alot better , way to go ................ And congrats on your tourney that you played on monday night, $3 entry, 935 players, and you made it to 15th place, Very Good ( and surprising) maybe now you will buy me dinner for once!!!

Alot of you guys who didnt play did manage to come to the table and chat it up , some of you apologizing for not being able to play or some who had just forgot , i hope to see all of you next week.

ThepokerGrind.net Bounty Tournament is Weekly !!!
Sunday Nights at 10pm EST on Full Tilt
buyin - $20+2

To be honest, my head was just not in the game that night and i feel that affected my play , and im not even talking about my son being sick , i guess i had a 'bad' day at work on sunday and im still thinking about it today ( 2 days later ) , perhaps ill share with you guys a diff time , i hate to give excuses , but too bad..

Thanksgiving Update: Thanks For Giving Me Money

I wanted to post this earlier but here goes....

After some turkey on thursday night by a friends house ( thanks for inviting us btw) I went over to another friends house bec he was hosting a $100 buyin tourney.
After I got there I realized that the tourney was structured as a rebuy tourney...allowing unlimited rebuys for the first hour and then a $50 addon..we had 15 players so we had 2 tables.
I was able to chip up pretty early after I flopped a flush in the big blind, I kept check-calling to the aggressive guy sitting on the button until I went all in after the river and he was commited and had to call...he flipped over pocket 10's and was disgusted at the way I slow played him..
After the break there was $2600 in the prizepool and when we got down to 5 players everyone ( but me ) wanted to chop, I had no choice but to agree and I got $550 . I never rebought and I did buy the addon so I was in it for $150 and made a profit of $400

We played a cash game after and I made about $250...so all in all I had a great thanksgiving.

Don't forget about Sunday nights ThePokerGrind.net Bounty Tournament. Last week we had an amazing 24 runners show up for the 1st event of what seems like will be a weekly tourney.
The game will be on Full Tilt
Click on Tournaments > Private to find the tourney lobby
buyin is $20 + 2 ( $15 towards prizepool and $5 towards each players bounty )
Time / date - 10pm , Nov 25th

Why I Love Razz. No. Really!

By: The Monster Stack (Guest Blogger)

Hello,

I would like to talk a little about my favorite poker game, Razz. Yes, you read that correctly. Razz! This is the game that when being played, the entire table wonders why it is they are even playing. Almost everyone seems like they would rather be somewhere else. Finding Razz in a casino is not possible in any poker room on the East Coast of which I am aware and I am pretty sure that it is difficult, if not impossible to find it spread in any casino elsewhere outside of a mixed game. Even playing online poker I have had to wait at a table for some time until it filled up. Razz SNGs are impossible to get going online - I have sat registered for five different Razz SNGs at multiple stakes for hours without so much as one other registrant. I once put my laptop in standby mode overnight only to realize that I had forgotten to unregister from a Razz SNG. Lucky for me nobody registered. Razz MTTs run a few times throughout the day on PokerStars and other sites but rarely draw that many players and the stakes are usually less than $10 or $20. The most entrants I have seen on PokerStars in an MTT is about 150 and that was because it had a guaranteed prize pool (of only $1000), which people seem to love. The WCOOP and FTOPS attract a decent number of entrants into their Razz tournaments, but again, they have large guaranteed prize pools. I am convinced that people would enter a coin flipping competition if they guaranteed a million dollar prize pool.

So by now you might be asking yourself why on earth I think Razz is the best form of poker out there. If all of the above is true then why would I like it? Well, for a number of reasons. First of all, I'll run through the rules really quickly for those who are unfamiliar with the game. Razz is like 7 Card Stud but it is played low, meaning the worst hand wins. Unlike 7 Card Stud Eight or Better there is no qualifier (more on that shortly). Like 7 Card Stud, seven cards are dealt to each player one at a time after the initial deal of three cards. There is a betting round after each card is dealt. So each player is dealt two cards down and one up. Then there is a betting round. Then three more cards are dealt up with a betting round between each and the seventh card is dealt down with one final betting round. The lowest hand wins with the wheel, 5-4-3-2-A (straights and flushes are ignored) being the best. Aces play as low. The second best hand is 6-4-3-2-A followed by 6-5-3-2-A, and so on. The worst hand would be K-K-K-K-Q-(Q-Q). A good starting in Razz would be (2-4)-A or (5-3)-2. Unlike in Stud Eight or Better the five lowest cards do not need to be 8 or less so therefore J-10-8-5-3 beats K-4-3-2-A (which would be a really bad beat), the former being a jack low and the latter being a king low.

So you might still be asking yourself why on earth I would love a game where bad hands are good and good hands are bad. Well, first of all, I tend to enjoy any game that isn't Hold 'Em. I enjoy Stud games very much as I have a better feel for the game. I often read and hear of how people play by feel more than there cards. They play the players and the situation, which of course is the proper way to play. I find that I do this much better in Stud style games. However the most important reason I play Razz is because I feel that I am better than the majority of people who play Razz online, particularly at the middle limits. It's not that I think that I am such a great player. It's more that I feel everyone else is not. Most people who play Razz online come and go. There are a few of us Razz people who are regulars at the tables and I know who they are. For the most part, when someone sits down at a Razz table online I know if they are regulars as there are not many. This means that those who are not are either learning the game, experts who are first beginning to play online or those who are either taking a break from another game or just want to see what this Razz thing is all about.

Of the above mentioned groups, the majority are fall into the first and last categories as most "pros" would not just pop in for a quick game. Most experts would be longtime regulars. While there are many who are trying to learn the game, I find that many just pop in and play a little to check out the game. Therefore I am at a distinct advantage. I can make my money off of those who are really not familiar with the rules. These players tend to make very costly errors, which is something one should never do against someone who plays Razz. They are easy to pick off as they do not have good hand selection and they tend to pay off a better hand pretty regularly. I am very familiar with how the game is played and take pride in being able to pick off these players. I seem to be able to fold losers, lose the minimum in a cooler situation and get the max out of my big hands. I wish I could do that in Hold 'Em. I also have a pretty good ability to read a bluff in Razz which is something I think is easier to pick up in Stud type games.

Here's another interesting benefit to playing Razz. When playing Razz you will occasionally find yourself with a monster starting hand like (2-4)-A and will raise it up. Unlike in Hold 'Em, however, Razz is a drawing game. Someone with a reasonable starting hand will look you up so a completion or a raise on third street may not get them to fold. Now you get dealt fourth street only to find a Q so now your hand looks like this: (2-4)-A-Q. Your opponent's board may be something like (x-x)-6-3. Now what? Let's assume it goes check-check and you get to fifth. You are now dealt a J for a board of (2-4)-A-Q-J. Ugly! It's worse if your opponent has something like: (x-x)-6-3-7. This happens often in Razz where you will start with a monster and brick fourth and fifth streets while your opponent hits gin. You must fold. Unlike in Hold 'Em where pocket aces or pocket kings are often the best hand after a "missed" flop, that luxury does not hold true in Razz. So you get used to "bad beats" or hands like the one above. They happen all too often. So when you move back to Hold 'Em it's easier to take the coolers and the "bad beats" that inevitably occur. In Razz you learn to smile and play the next deal as though it were the first since you sat down.

So next time you are online take a seat at a Razz table and give it a try. You never know. It could be you next favorite game. Here's hoping. Look out for some Razz strategy articles in the future.

See you on the felt,

Recap: ThePokerGrind.net's Bounty Tournament

We had a great turnout in our 1st ever , weekly ThePokerGrind.net Bounty Tournament this past sunday night. All in all we had 24 players all vying for the 1st TPGnet Bounty Title. That honor has gone to my good friend roochie m , Congrats on taking down the title!!

I didnt play too well and was eliminated in 20th place , ouch ... and congrats to Kaja for earning the easiest bounty on the internet and knocking yours truly out of the tournament..

although , my play wasnt too bad , but i really got sucked out on the river , heres a screenshot of my last hand

The tourney was completed in about 3 hours , and the top 3 places got paid

Lathiat finished on the final table bubble setting the stage for an intense final table

9th place - Kajagugu , kaja is a great tourney player and
Ive battled him in a MATH final table in the past. Although
He didnt cash , he earned a bounty for knocking me out

8th place - riggstad , Host of the weekly Riverchasers Tour , thanks for playing!

6th place - Fuel55 , one of my first poker blogs ive ever come across and still one of my favorite must reads , I guess presto couldnt win this title for you , see ya next week

Winner - roochie m , well well well , what can i say , First off , let me apologize for calling you a fish. When i originally created this tourney , it was for a few of my neghborhood friends , including roochie m, and in my original post , when i called my neghborhood friends fish , i was actually referring to you !! The last few months we have spoken alot about poker, strategy and bank roll management, And i always respected your Cash Game play , especially in Pot Limit Omaha. However, i had zero respect for your tournament skillz, and thought you were the biggest tourney fish out there. Well , i have been proven wrong and you really showed me that when you get into a zone then you are un-stoppable. I know the winnings is pocket change to you, but i know the bragging rights is priceless.

heres the winning hand

and heres a pic of the final stats

And a quick thanks to some of my neighborhood buddies who came out and played,

Played in a Live Cash Game , Made $360!!

2 nights ago i went to a live cash game , i did pretty well , and made $360

I am extremely proud of the way i played and pretty excited about 1 particular hand that i played.
One of my major leaks in poker is maximizing my hand when i know i have the best hand or the nuts. Ive been working on that for a while now and feel i played a hand to perfection. It also helps that i flopped a full house....but i defintiely maximized my value and got paid off nicely

The game - $2/$5 No Limit
Table has 10 players and im in the big blind

Unknown SB
Thepokergrind BB
UTG limps for $5
UTG +1 limps for $5
UTG+2 limps $5
Button limps for $5
comes around to SB and he calls
My turn , look down and see pocket 22 and i check my option
flop is 9 9 2 ( wow , i flop a full house !! )
SB checks
BB ( me ) checks
UTG bets $15
UTG +1 folds
UTG + 2 calls the $15
Button Folds
SB folds
BB ( me ) i called ( i was thinking of going for a raise but figured ill wait it out
The turn is a J ( board showing 9 9 2 J )
I decide to bet out $40
UTG ( original raiser ) folds
UTG + 2 raises to $80
BB , I flat call and i figure ill make a move on the river now that we are heads up
River card brings a 3
At this stage i feel i have the best hand and i assume the UTG + 2 has a 9
I decided to slow play and i check the river ,
UTG + 2 bets out $50
and i decide to think and ponder and re raise him ALL in , raising an additional $140.
At this stage UTG +2 deicedes to think about this , and i notice he is staring at me lokking for a tell ( and the fact that he didnt insta call sort of told me he didnt have a 9 ,but prob high pocket pair, or he might be holding a jack and thinks his top pair is good)
At this point he has been thinking for about 60 seconds and i decide to do a bit of hollywooding , i stand up and try to look strong , i say to him , i guess u can only call me with a 9..i help myself to a drink and he is staring at me , he decides to call and he flips over pocket 10's , proving to me that he actually thought i was bluffing

Nice!!

As i mentioned in a previous post , Tomorrow ( Sunday 11/18/2007 ) i am hosting a private Bounty Tournament on Full tilt
details -

Why I Don't Play Rebuy Tourneys

By: The Monster Stack (Guest Blogger)

Hello,

This image speaks for itself, however I'll give you a little background to better understand it. This is a $3 re-buy tourney to the Sunday Million on PokerStars. I never play re-buy tourneys and almost never play satellites. But occasionally I'll throw some dead money in. I have won a couple to make it worth it. Anyway, back to the tourney. I decided that I was not going to re-buy or add-on. I figured that if I got a couple of hands early on I can get some chips. There are so many people going all-in in the first few levels that getting chips is easy without re-buying. If I get unlucky, I move on. So here it is. I have the Q-Q. The A-6 limped under-the-gun. I pushed all-in hoping to get into a coin flip or a get a worse pair to call. Well, I got FOUR callers. Typical. I hated that one. But when I saw their hands I was pretty happy. Although with five players in the hand my odds decrease, I am still almost 40% to win the hand. The 7-3o is less than 8% to win. Well, I think I have said more than enough. Here's the screen shot. Click to see the full-sized version.

This might have been my last re-buy. Well, probably not. I laughed this one off and moved on but I thought it'd be a nice piece for the blog.

Keep an eye on this blog for a series of articles on how I won a 180 person $22 Sit-n-Go for $1,080.

My Day at The Borgata

I got to the borgata at 9:30 am yesterday with plenty of time before the 11am tournament. I registered for the tourney , costing me $50 + 10 and was told they were expecting about 400 players.

With over an hour before the tourney started, I sat down at a 1/2 table with $100 in chips and was hoping to make enough to cover my tournament entry. I had a bit of a card rush and by 11am was up $115. While waiting online to cash my chips , some other dude there asked to buy my chips off me so he doesn't have to wait either..he only had 20's on him and told me to keep the change and gave me $220

I lasted about 4 hours in the tourney until I busted , not sure what # , but there were about 19 tables left.

I then sat down at 1/2 and played very tight and waited for good cards. The good cards came and I was able to make $355 profit. I had already decided that I was not going to stay for the big 7pm tourney, reason being was that I was very tired and knew I couldn't play straight. After about 2 hours on the 1/2 I got up and left.

later on last night , I logged on and sat at the 2/4 table with $240 ...i waited for the blinds to go around a few times until I picked up pocket KK. I limped in and the big blind made it $30 and I flat called. Flop came J 3 8 rainbow , I checked , he went all in , I called.......the turn was a blank and the river was the 1 card I was affraid of , it was an ace , and I figured he had at least AX .. I was wrong , he had pocket aces .. What a cooler!!

ouch

wish me luck

Some updates of todays play

Wow , What a bad beat .. I have QQ vs 33 , he catches a 3 on the river

luckily i had enough chips to cover him

--------------------------------------------------

here i am playing a $10 buyin , 180 entrants , top 18 get paid ...i got knocked out in 19th place , yep , i got knocked out on the bubble my friends.. and it wasnt because i was short stacked , in fact i was in 11th place , but i was playing the bubble way too aggressively and stealing lots of blinds and antes , but i ran into pocket KK and that ended my run

heres a pic

My Poker For this Novemeber

I will definitely be playing a lot of 2/4 , I've been playing well and its been profitable for me. I have a few leaks that I desperately need to work on. But I feel I can make $200 per session . Each session seems to last about 2 hours and I only play 1 table at a time.

I don't know how many sit n go's ill play, but not too many.

I will definitely be playing some low stakes MTT's ( multi table tournaments ) , I am working on my game and trying to make it to ITM at least. Afterall , my goals for PCA now are just to be ITM!!

I just logged off , finished a 2 hr session and made about $170 .

wish me luck

I Got Very Deep in a Tourney today !!

Today I had a good run at the tables, I started off with playing some cash tables and played the 2/4 table for about 2 hours and made about $150 .. I only shut off the table after i lost to a bad beat and was affraid i may tilt away some more money so i ended it there.

I also played a a satellite into the Pokerstars Sunday Million, it was an $80 buy in and for every $215 in the prizepool another winner , basically it was 1 out of every 3 players would get the prize. I noticed that pokerstars runs these tourneys a few hours before the Sunday Millions starts. I feel my odds are pretty good and i ended up winning the tourney and i quickly unregistered and kept the $215 in the form of Tourney Dollars. I will make an effort to play this type of satellite every week , i feel my odds are good and i dont need to outlast everyone.

I also decided to practice my MTT skills , in preparation of PCA. I entered a tourney that was a $11 buyin and had a whopping 18,500 entrants , creating a prize pool of over $180k. It was a deep stack tourney and the top 3000 finishers got paid , Im happy to say that i made it to 22nd place and made about $370
. I sort of had a bad beat at the end , but im not going to whine about it. Im happy with the way that i played and my level of patience i showed throughout the tourney.

I attached a pic of the tourney

Played in Live Game Last Night

Yesterday I went to a live 2/5 cash game. I bought in for $160 and cashed out $545. I got there at about 11pm and left 2:30am....not a bad per/hr profit..
The game was very soft , the players were not pros, they sweetened every pot pre flop so I just played patient until I hit something good..
Biggest hand of the night was my pocket kings earning me about $300

I will head to the borgata next week to brush up on my Live Game Tourney skills, I wanna be prepared for the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure event.

Wish me luck

Monthly Update

October has been a good month for me. My SnG challenge sort of fizzled , although I did very well.
I played 95 single table tourneys , with a $11 buyin , profit is $380 , my per/hr is a paltry $16.50

I will prob not continue an sng challenge this month, but I do hope to play at least 50 this month.

I just withdrew $2300 from my pokerstars account ... $1k was given to me after I won my PCA Steps package , they put $1k in my account so I can buy airline tickets to get to the bahamas.
The other $1300 was profit I made playing the 2/4 cash tables. I made all $1300 in the last half of the month.

My goals for Nov are to play a few multi table tourneys, a lot of satellites , perhaps win a entry to an APPT event..and hit the 2/4 tables hard

wish me luck
